This Privacy Policy describes how Green Zone ("we", "us", or "our") collects, uses, and protects your information when you visit our website. Green Zone is a free service — we do not sell your data.

Green Zone is a free interactive crime map of New Zealand. We are committed to being transparent about how our site works and what limited data we process. Because we do not require user accounts, the information we collect is minimal and relates primarily to site analytics.
No Personal Data Collection: Green Zone does not require you to create an account, sign in, or provide any personal information such as your name, email address, or phone number. You can use the entire site anonymously.
Analytics Data: Cloudflare, the company that hosts this site, provides us with aggregate visitor statistics and page-speed measurements. We also record two things ourselves through a first-party endpoint on this domain: error messages (so we can find and fix faults) and clicks on commercial links (so we know which recommendations are useful). No analytics data is sent to any third-party analytics company, no cookies are used, and we do not store your IP address. Query strings are stripped before anything is recorded, so search terms and map coordinates are never stored.
Local Storage: We may store non-personal preferences (such as your preferred map view or layer selections) in your browser's local storage. This data never leaves your device and is not accessible to us. We also keep a random identifier in your browser's session storage, so that the errors and link clicks from one visit can be grouped together — that way we can tell how many people were affected rather than only how many times something happened. That identifier is a random string with no connection to you, is discarded when you close the tab, and is never used to follow you across other websites.
Map Tiles: When you view the map, your browser requests map tiles directly from OpenFreeMap (tiles.openfreemap.org), a separate service that we do not control. Those requests necessarily carry your IP address and the map area you are looking at, because that is how the tiles are delivered to you. OpenFreeMap does not use cookies and does not maintain a user database. The map data itself is © OpenStreetMap contributors, served via OpenMapTiles.
Because we collect so little, our use of information is limited and straightforward.
Analytics data helps us understand how many people use Green Zone, which pages are most popular, and whether the site is performing well technically. This allows us to fix bugs and improve the experience for everyone.
We do not use any collected data to profile you, track you across the web, or make automated decisions about you.
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your web browser. Green Zone sets no cookies of its own, and our analytics set none either. We do not use advertising cookies or follow you across other websites.
Managing Cookies: You can control and delete cookies through your browser settings. Since the crime map does not rely on cookies, blocking them will not affect its functionality.
We Do Not Sell Data: We do not sell, rent, or trade any user data to third parties.
Service Providers: Green Zone is hosted on Cloudflare, and our analytics run on Cloudflare's own infrastructure, so performance, traffic and error data does not leave the provider that already delivers the site. We send no analytics data to any separate third-party monitoring company. Our providers are bound to handle data securely and only for the purposes we specify.
Legal Obligations: We may disclose information if required to do so by law, such as in response to a court order or valid legal request from New Zealand authorities.
Data Security: We use industry-standard TLS/SSL encryption for all data transmitted between your browser and our servers. Since we do not collect personal data or store user accounts, there is no central database of personal information that could be breached.
Green Zone operates in accordance with the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020. Under this Act, you have the right to:

Since Green Zone does not collect personal information (we do not ask for your name, email, or any identifying details), there is generally no personal information for us to provide or correct. Our website may contain links to external sites, such as official police data sources, government statistics pages, or partners we earn a commission from. We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of these third-party websites. When you follow one of our commercial or referral links, the destination site will receive the page you came from and its own privacy policy will apply, so we encourage you to read it. We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or legal obligations. When we make material changes, we will update the effective date at the top of this page.
